Why use the Kindergarten Literacy Routines?
I’ve created the Kindergarten Literacy Routines with these important things in mind:
- Keep it developmentally appropriate for little learners
- Base it on the research by The Science of Reading
- Align with my school’s reading curriculum (CKLA)
- Make it fast paced
- Keep it short and sweet
- Easy for teachers and students to use
The Kindergarten Literacy Routines are developmentally appropriate for your young learners.
I’ve made sure that the skills introduced in the Kindergarten Literacy Routines are sequenced in a natural progression where the skills build upon the ones that were taught before.
We start with the very basics of concepts of print and beginning phonemic awareness. Phonics skills are gradually introduced to ensure mastery.
Each skill routine uses vocabulary that is easily understood by kindergarteners and vibrant graphics that engage them during small group instruction.
Created with The Science of Reading in mind
The Science of Reading shows that phonemic awareness and phonics skills much be explicitly taught. The Kindergarten Literacy Routines target specific skills through direct small group instruction and fluency practice.
The skills covered in this resource are broken down to the most basic level to start out with, and gradually increase in difficulty and skill level.
Aligned with curriculum
I needed a resource that was simple, effective, and aligned with my district’s reading curriculum. My school uses Amplify CKLA, and the sounds and letters are taught in a very specific order.
The Kindergarten Literacy Routines introduce letter sounds, decodable words, and Tricky Words (sight words) in an order that is research based and aligned with CKLA.
Many reading programs introduce letters and sounds in a similar order, so the Kindergarten Literacy Routines will work well with any reading curriculum during small groups.
Teachers and students love the fast paced routines
Each skill routine is simple and quick so you can utilize your time efficiently. The routines are easy for students to catch on to, making the work smooth sailing for everyone.
I planned the Kindergarten Literacy Routines in such a way that students can practice their skills quickly and automatically.
The routines are short and sweet!
Boy, you sure get the biggest bang for your buck with the Kindergarten Literacy Routines! I’ve fit in a ton of skills into a small group instruction warmup routine that takes LESS THAN 5 MINUTES!
That means your students can zoom through the routines with a BUNCH of practice and still have ample time for more explicit small group instruction on tricky skills.
Maximize the impact of your small group instruction with the Kindergarten Literacy Routines
Since the routines are kept the same each week, teachers and students know what to expect every time they sit down for small group reading instruction.
Teachers can spend more time instructing and having students work on what they really need instead of explained how to do multiple activities.
Once one the skill routines is learned, students will automatically practice the skill without needing an explanation from their teacher.
